Major Economic Highlights
  • Since 1999, year which Mr Abdelaziz Bouteflika was elected to the Presidency, the Algerian economy has stood out through the reestablishment of its fundamentals, the launch of growth programmes, tackling weak inflation, cutting down unemployment and the positive evolution of its External Balance of Payments main indicators.
  •  According to The Central Bank Governor, in 2006 the external balance of payments reached 28.95 Billion USD and 25.1% of the Gross Domestic Product.
  •  In 2006, Hydrocarbon Exportations earned 53.61 Billion USD and 20.68 Billion USD was spent on Importations. Trade with Africa has been granted particular attention in the sense of its promotion with regard to South – South Cooperation
  • At the end of 2006, The Foreign Reserves were at 77.78 Billion USD
  • Algeria signed an Association Agreement with The European Union, its main economic and trade partner.
  • Currently, Algeria is in the process of finalizing negotiating of the admission into the World Trade Organization (WTO).
  • Besides hydrocarbons, Algeria exports diverse agro-industrial products of which certain (agricultural equipment) has been exported to Zimbabwe
  • Realization of an economic growth plan worth 140 Billion USD 2005-2009.
  • The country has major attributes for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in terms of energy availability, good basic infrastructure, qualified personnel and its geo-strategy situation (see link: investment guide)  and its protected by National Law and bilateral agreements on BIPA’s and International Conventions such as MIGA. The Algerian Investment provide the follows:
    • No discrimination between both National and International investors, be they resident or non-resident, moral or physical persons
    • The freedom of enterprise, such as preamble authority is not required
    • The guarantee to transfer funds
    • Resolution of disagreements based on International arbitration.
    • A single body at the National Agency for the Development of Investments (Agence Nationale de development des Invetissements - ANDI – see link)
